Me and a friend did a similar thing once, but with papier-mache, so people could actually hit them, and stuff would come out. Kind of like Mario-themed pinatas. Dollar store toy money, sprayed with gold paint, makes a great stand-in for coins.
I'm pretty sure that with the US as freaked out as they are, hanging a funny looking box thing from a powerline will probably get you marked as a terrorist and shot.
