I did a local Freecycle for a while. If you live in a well-populated area, expect to get a TON of email every day.

Freecycle is great and most transactions go smoothly, but a few warnings:

In every area there is at least one person who will try to get anything and everything because it is free. I say make 'em write an essay on why they are deserving of your castoff. ;)

Also, if you leave your freebie outside for pick-up by the other party, be sure to put the rest of your property on lockdown.

I have read stories of a woman who took an entire basket of seed packs, when the offer was one per person and a man who picked up some free lumber left out front only to help himself to what was behind the house as well.

Yes, there are people who will take advantage of you if they can in anything you do. There re many different ways to get or give your stuff to someone safely and they never have to know where you live. The moderator of the group(s) you belong to can help out in this area. You can also choose to not get email sent to your inbox. You'll just have to visit the site instead to see what's posted. This is a great way to keep still useful items out of the landfill & keep the mass consumerism plague from getting worse.
