Games aren't really progressing in technology that fast these days. Notice that the Xbox 360 doesn't seem a whole lot different than the Xbox? Sure, the graphics are a little better, but it's not like we're seeing anything innovative.
Yeah, they spend millions to make graphics a little better when they could find a way to make those eDimensional 3D glasses work on consoles too and develop binaural sound for video games.

Cartridges were between $30 - $40 in 1980's money in the ads I read.
3D glasses only work for people who have two eyes. People with eye patches would feel left out.
You do know that pirates are a huge market for console games, right?
