The letters would be unnesessary bekause they would be replased by other letters. It's not a kwestion of removing letters.

How would you spell "chair," though?

Yeah, I'm sure they thought the confusing hard and soft sounds would be better represented by k and s, but ch throws a wrench in that idea.
