Bye bye, game thread :(

Jan 27th, 2011

I stopped going to the forums a long time ago. There was barely any activity there anyway.

Jan 27th, 2011

Yeah... Our community is just too darn small. :(

Jan 27th, 2011

quality. not quantity. right guys?

Jan 27th, 2011

I'm actually trying to think of ways to get the quantity up a bit more around here.

Jan 27th, 2011

Those of us that are here have been here quite a while. I think I started coming when I was a junior in high school.... 6 years ago. Although I havent been nearly as active as others. But I havent seen too many new names over the years.

I still enjoy stopping in though.

Jan 28th, 2011

Indeed. I've been a faithful follower since somewhere in the early 2000's. Though the community is small I've felt that to be mildly helpful because the site continually contains some of the best links around. The only issue I've found is the small insurgence of bot users. Annoying as it may be, maybe a captcha system should be installed?

Jan 28th, 2011

I like Captcha because I feel I'm doing something worthwhile, besides helping rid the world of bots.

Jan 28th, 2011

I've written a CAPTCHA PHP script. It was fun.

I don't even remember how I FOUND in4mador, but after like a year or two I made me an account and I've been here ever since. :P

I always try to get people to join, but.. I guess they don't share my nerdiness

Jan 28th, 2011

I guess there just isn't much lasting appeal. I'm sure a lot of people just want a quick link fix without having to trade, or just create an account to drop off a single link, then move on. Or just don't like the dynamic, like that guy from the forum who said I was harrassing him, and then claimed that in4mador was mine and gave him a virus.

Aside from stuff like that, some growth would be cool

Jan 29th, 2011

The internet is still young. We'll probably hit critical mass in a couple of decades.

I have a few ideas that might be able to help the site a bit, but it's entirely possible that it's retarded and too hard to implement as is, so feel free to add to, modify and adapt those ideas however you guys want and claim all the credit for them.

One way I think we could have some more lasting appeal would be if some of us regulars could get some creative juice flowing every once in a while and have some original content on the site, linked to on the main page (more on that later). Personally, I already write weekly articles for a collective (French language) blog, so it wouldn't be too hard to translate and "syndicate" them here. I don't know if any of you have anything else (Brad already pimps his music on his other site, so it would be up to us), but "come for the links, stay for the articles analysing the Mushroom Kingdom's politics and calling the Princess Kim Jong-Il" might work.

The biggest constraint we'd have to deal with is that we can't really host games and videos here (or even images, although we can host them elsewhere and link them) lest we drive the bandwidth usage through the roof.

My other ideas are mostly ways to make the new talk links less awkward to use and easier to see, but they could also be the basis for the original content system's linking. First, I guess we would need a "Latest Talks" below the Latest games and Latest generators thingies on the side, so that threads don't get pushed off the Latest Comments section by a wave of actual link comments and then remain in obscurity forever. I'd also say that bringing back the yellow background or something similar for In4mador and Talk links would be nice, so we could quickly see that "Nice weather isn't it" isn't a link, and vice-versa. If we ever get original content, those could be green, or whatever else.

So, we'd pretty much have the new integrated "forum" and some OC readily available from the front page within the same system as links, making us some sort of imageboard, but with links (linkboard?). It would help make the site feel more alive, since everything would be in the same place and so the front page would update more often.

And I think that's all the ideas I had for now. If parts of what I said don't make sense, just ask and I could whip up a quick model to illustrate.

Those are cool ideas, thanks Bujold. I like the talk category link idea for sure and will get on that very soon.

I wouldn't worry about bandwidth. I can host pretty much whatever on here. Legality is a bigger issue -- re-hosting other people's content, etc.

Feel free to email me ( if you want to discuss anything along those lines.

There's a 'talk' tab now on the front page, so y'all can see the talk category easily.

Neat. I still think colour-coding posts on the front page like In4mador linkless links used to be would be nice though.

And for original content, is anybody else (that means you guys up there, I know a lot of you have websites and thus are at least a little bit creative) interested in making stuff for some In4marticles or whatever we could have here? Or having some stuff double-posted here? I realised the other day that I might be the only one who would be better off having some of my stuff here too since my website and In4mador are in different languages and so the two websites wouldn't really be competing with each other, but of course you guys might find some way it could also benefit you.

Another type of original content I thought of that would be more true to the spirit of the site would be some kind of (possibly) weekly In4mablog expanding on one of the more popular links of the week/month and linking to, say, a bunch of videos by the same comedy troupe or similar games. Or any other concept one of you would like to use that Brad would approve of.

Feb 17th, 2011

Here's my 2 cents: maybe we should have a pics thread for those images we find that don't really deserve an entire front page.

Mar 29th, 2011

I'm down with Planettroy's idea, but I think there would need to be stronger organization for pictures, compared to links. Maybe use subcategories, or cluster them by user.

May 16th, 2011

I don't know if I should say this here or make another "thread" for it, but, did anyone else notice the sidebar being broken? It's been like this for a while...

After the last "recent comments" link, all links have the same ID, so, for example, if the last "recent comments" link was "Soviet political propaganda posters", all other links have that same ID, and always lead to that same page, no matter the name.

The spambots aren't even trying anymore
